The Bungay Riverside Centre at The Staithe was originally conceived as the headquarters for the Waveney Valley Canoe Club which needed more space for storage of canoes, changing rooms and showers plus improved river access.

It was then agreed that the building should also benefit the wider public with the provision of a community room, kitchen, car park and other facilities.

Funding was attracted from a number of organisations including the European Union and the East of England Development Agency.

Designed by architect Howard Birch, the building cost £300,000 and additional funding for the improved Riverside scheme was provided by the European Suffolk Regeneration budget, Suffolk County Council, the Environment Agency and the Broads Authority.

The project was led by Bungay Town Council which owns and administers the building.

This innovative building is a welcome addition to the scene at Bungay Staithe and the upper rooms are frequently hired for classes, meetings, social events and business events. The building is unique in Bungay as a venue, having a wonderful aspect over the picturesque Staithe and the River Waveney.  The Staithe is in a quiet area of Bungay and, out of respect for our neighbours there, we hope to keep it that way!
